Today, ISIS fighters succeeded to shoot down a SyAAF MiG-21 piloted by Col. Ali Hamza "العقيد علي حمزة" which crashed at Al-Thardah mount area near Deir EzZour AB, the pilot is KIA.
The aircraft is supposed to be operating from Qamishli airport which recently witnessed the deployment of numbers of Su-22, MiG-21 in addition to Mi-17 helicopters.
Is there any good estimate, how many SyAAF planes and helicopters remain operational?
ReplyDeletesyrian air force has more than 200 mig-21 in 2010..so i think less than 50% are in operational condition..
DeleteOkay. So according to Terra Server, which provides more up to date satellite imagery than Google Earth, it shows 5 Mi-21bis/MF and two Su-22s + one Mi-17 present at Qamishli airport on August 14th, 2016. On September 5th, Terra Server shows 4 Mig-21bis/MFs, minus the Su-22s. However, two Mi-17s are present on the apron. Further south in Deir ez Zor, the SyAAF moved all its operational aircraft there to Qamishli, due to the combat situation and the deteriorating maintenance situation for these Mig-21s.

According to the latest ISIS video showing Deir EzZour AB, it's interesting to see 2 -must be operational- L-39s in the western double-HAS !! These must be flying night sorties as well as the other Albatroses in Aleppo.
DeleteHi.. I heard that ISIS managed to shot down another Syrians Mig-23 at eastern Qalamoun ..can you verified that and fate of the pilot?
ReplyDeleteI'd put good money on it being a Mig-23BN.
DeleteThe pilot of the Mig-23 is okay. He was rescued by the Ahmad Abdo Brigade of the FSA, and was taken to 3rd Division HQ in the Qalamoun. Apparently the SyAAF subsequently bombed ISIS positions, which allowed the FSA to push them back. So it appears they are working together to some extent. Which isn't a surprise seeing as how the rebel groups in the Qalamoun have worked with the gov't before.
