SyAAF MiG-23BN Shot Down (2014-06-23)

Some photos and a video for a SyAAF MiG-23BN shot down on 23th Jun. 2014 by Al Muthanna Bin Haretha battalion in the eastern Qalamoun area to the north of Damascus.
Above a photo for the tail with the chaff/flares dispenser mounted aside. It looks each dispenser carries 14 flares.

The serial of this BN is 1665, and should be based in Nasriyeh AFB.

Remnant of front landing gear.

The pilot is KIA, some photos are available but not convenient to publish them here...

how do you come to the conclusion it was shot down and not a mechanical failure ?

    1. As reported by the available data from FSyA spotters. Mechanical failure is possible, but not plausible here since the pilot didn't eject.

It's strange that in the first photo, there is no flag on the fin, where as in the video it is there...

    1. It looks the first photo was taken after the wreckage is found and before being examined by rebels...that's why you can see it is still dusty.
Anyway, even in the video the number is washed-out and the flag is kinda foggy, aircraft camo and insignia need regular maintenance and repainting.

  3. It´s interesting, that there are very few images of the Syrian MiG-23BN fleet. I saw many images of it´s MiG-23MS/MF/ML/MLD figther, but BN version is really uncommon. Why is it so? Are there any images available?

    1. It's true. That's because the BN's were positioned in the very secretive Seen AB and in Nasriyeh AB which almost zero photo leaked from it
