SyAAF Mi-8 Shot Down (2015-05-24)
24th May 2015, a SyAAF Mi-8 flying towards Kweres AB (Aviation Academy) and piloted by Col. Muhammad Mahmoud and Col. Adel Al-Saleh (or Col. Adel Issa) to deliver fuel and ammo to the besieged units in the airfield, has been intercepted by ISIS fire -23mm 'Doshka' guns as stated- and shot down nearby the airbase.
Both crew are KIA.
Any estimate on about how many Mi-8/17 examples remain operable? What effect would this type of loss have on the SyAAF's ability to re-supply bases?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
It's just my own estimation: I would tell there are no more than 40 Mi-8/17 are left operational with the SyAAF.
DeleteAbout the effect: remember that some airbases and military units can receive logistics only by helicopters by dropping them or by landing on the base itself.
Judging by the remnants of a weapon pylon (very beginning of the video, lower-left corner of the frame), I'd say that was a Mi-8T.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks! corrected accordingly ;)
